The Dangers of Parabens in Cosmetics and Skincare Products

Health magazines are warning us about the dangers of parabens. More and more beauty products are labeled “paraben-free.” Yet, the FDA has approved these ingredients. They’re found in thousands of perfumes, face creams, body lotions, and makeup kits.

Are parabens really that harmful? If so, why? Let’s see what researchers have to say!

What Are Parabens?

Parabens are chemical compounds used as preservatives in cosmetics and fragrances. Their role is to prevent bacteria and mold growth. Manufacturers add them to shampoos, topical ointments, toothpaste, beauty products, moisturizers, and shaving gels.

These ingredients have the ability to fight a broad spectrum of pathogens. Their antibacterial activity is highly prized in the cosmetic industry. According to researchers, they work by inhibiting DNA and RNA synthesis in certain bacteria, such as E. Coli and Bacillus subtilis, or by disrupting the membrane transport processes.

Despite their antimicrobial properties, parabens may not be safe for the human body. The FDA does not regulate cosmetic products. Unless a product is misbranded or adulterated, it can be sold in stores.

How Dangerous Are Parabens, Really?

There is a lot of debate about parabens and their safety. Some experts say that these compounds are safe and have no impact on estrogen levels and other hormones in the body. Others claim that parabens may increase the risk of breast cancer and hormonal disorders.

According to a 2004 study, these compounds have been found intact in human breast tumors, and they may be a contributing factor to cancer.

Additionally, these chemicals have estrogen-like properties, so they may disrupt your hormonal balance. Yet, experts claim that their estrogenic activity is 10,000 times weaker than 17 beta-estradiol and other phytoestrogens that occur naturally in plants, fruits, and vegetables. Basically, they’re too weak to cause any harm.

For every study that proves the safety of parabens, there are dozens of other studies showing the opposite. Researchers have linked them to birth defects, impaired thyroid function, low bone density, metabolic disorders, obesity, miscarriage, and cancer.

Considering that there are thousands of paraben-free products on the market, it’s not worth risking your health. Parabens are still being studied and their safety hasn’t been confirmed. Organic cosmetics are safer and better for your skin. At the end of the day, the choice is up to you.
